European University Chess Championship 2025: Full Overview
Participants:
In September 2025, the chess community will once again gather in Yerevan, Armenia, for one of the most prestigious student competitions on the continent, the European University Chess Championship. Part of the competition organized by the European University Sports Association (EUSA), the tournament will bring together young athletes from across Europe.
Historical overview and evolution
The European University Chess Championship has a rich history, having begun as part of the wider EUSA sports initiatives. Founded in 2001, the association’s competitions are held annually, with chess added to its roster in 2015. Interestingly, the first such championship was also held in Yerevan.
Since 2012, the EUSA has changed the format, hosting the major European University Games (EUG) in even-numbered years and individual championships in different sports in odd-numbered years. Notable venues in past years include Fuengirola (Spain) in 2017, Budapest (Hungary) in 2019, and in 2024 the tournament was part of the EUG in Debrecen and Miskolc (Hungary).
In 2024, Vilnius University won the blitz tournament, and the team from the Azerbaijan Sports Academy took first place in rapid chess.
